Abstract

In this document we highlight the impact of ISO-26262 on automotive HMIs, especially in the instrument cluster area.
We begin with the new opportunities provided by fully reconfigurable cluster instruments. Then we review the consequences to software development with regard to functional safety.
Finally, the document outlines a concept of how to use HMI solutions like EB GUIDE GTF within an Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL) relevant environment and still exploit the tooling benefits of EB GUIDE Studio.

Reconfigurable cluster instruments

New flexibility

As displays in the cluster instrument area expand into the field of fully reconfigurable clusters, the conventional gauges and warning lights are replaced by HMI that are fully modeled virtual solutions. Display resolutions are above 1280×480 pixels, which provides enough room to slide away the virtual gauges, and use the display space for driver assistance systems, the navigation map or media control. Different screen configurations for highway and city traffic become possible. You could even think of certain customizations the driver can apply to the screen to be displayed for the next 100.000 miles. All this will go hand in hand with the OEM branding of this very central display surface in the car.

Safety related on-screen elements

Some elements of the cluster instrument are only informative while others are crucial for on-road safety. For example, a wrongly displayed gear indicator after starting the engine could obviously cause an accident because the car reverses when the driver expected to move forward. Other warning indicators for other safety related systems like airbag warnings are just as critical and related to safety issues
